Mental Health
Mental health matters to everyone
Unfortunately, whilst there certainly shouldn’t be, there is still a stigma surrounding mental health, which can make it difficult for individuals to seek help when they need it. Many people may feel embarrassed or ashamed to admit they’re struggling, fearing judgement from their peers or superiors. However, it’s essential to remember that mental health issues are as relevant as physical conditions, and no-one should suffer alone.
Supporting our colleagues
As a business, it’s a priority for us to ensure we’re doing all we can to support our colleagues both inside and outside of the workplace – understanding that life can throw challenges that aren’t always easy to navigate.
When it comes to mental health, we want colleagues to know that help is always available. That’s why we have a network of Mental Health First Aiders across our branches who are always happy to have a confidential chat, direct people to the best resources, or just simply listen. We provide formal training for our first aiders, delivered by Mental Health England – to ensure they have the knowledge and confidence to undertake these voluntary roles – and we’re extremely grateful for the comfort and support they provide their colleagues.
We also provide a range of employee benefits, which includes access to a 24/7 helpline, with trained professionals on the other end of the line to direct them to a range of support with financial, legal and mental health related concerns, including access to telephone and face-to-face counselling. Ensuring they have access to specialist help, at no additional cost.
Supporting our workers
It’s important to us that we’re also able to provide wellbeing support to the people who come to us to seek work. Money is a huge factor when it comes to mental health, making job searching much more stressful when people are struggling. Life events such as bereavement, personal, family and health changes all impact how people are feeling and deal with everyday life. That’s why we want people to know that NRL provides resources to help.
Working with the Lighthouse Club
We’re proud to be a corporate supporter of the Lighthouse Club, a construction industry charity who provide emotional, physical and financial wellbeing support to engineering and construction workers and their families. This includes helping people with immediate support when they are in crisis, as well as giving them the tools to learn how to manage their mental health. From emergency food shops and counselling, to online training – their services are available completely free of charge. Helping people see clearly through their current situation and helping them to take control of their mental health.
Support is available through their 24/7 helpline, by text message, through their mobile app, as well as in person through their network of 160 beacon locations in the UK and Ireland.
Providing support to our PAYE workforce
To support temporary contractors who work with us through our Pay As You Earn engagement model, we’re pleased to provide additional benefits through the platform they use to access their payslips. Partnering with a benefits provider, this includes access to medical resources and wellbeing services. Such as telephone and video GP appointments and support for people making the difficult decision to move a loved one into care, which can be a stressful time. As well as a dedicated 24/7 support helpline that is open every day of the year, covering concerns such as bereavement, money and debt, mental health, relationship difficulties and legal information.
When joining our contracting community, workers are encouraged to make use of these resources whenever they need to.
