Colleagues join together to Walk With The Wounded
Colleagues in NRL’s Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and Recruitment businesses based in Egremont are joining together to take part in the Walking With The Wounded Cumbrian Challenge in September.
Walking With The Wounded supports Armed Forces veterans and their families across the UK, having delivered 3,344 mental health therapy sessions and secured 626 employment outcomes in 2020 to support ex-military personnel.
A community-led approach to ensure veteran inclusion
NRL were first introduced to Walking With The Wounded through their partnership with All Together Cumbria, a social enterprise who reinvest funds generated through recruitment activity back into the community to help retrain and redeploy local people.
Walk With The Wounded’s Cumbrian Challenge will be a much-anticipated event, having been postponed in 2020 to ensure participant’s safety. Taking place on Saturday 11th September, the challenge starts off in Grasmere in the Lake District before teams and individuals undertake one of three routes – a 10km and 900m ascent, a tough 22km with 1350 ascent, and the toughest route covering 26km and 1900m of ascent. Since the event was first established in 2019 over 850 teams have taken part which has generated £1.2m in fundraising.
NRL’s team will be made up of NDT management team Phil Jennings and Steve Murphy, alongside Group HSE&Q Manager Pat McCarthy and Senior Recruitment Consultant James Banton.
The charity has a personal connection for team captain Pat, who served in the Royal Air Force for 22 years including tours in both the Falkland Islands and the Gulf.
“We’re delighted to be taking part in Walking With The Wounded’s Cumbrian Challenge, although a little apprehensive about the distance we’ll be covering!
The event provides the opportunity to meet some of the beneficiaries of the great work WWTW do in our community, so we’re really looking forward to hearing their stories.”
Fundraising for a great cause
Walking With The Wounded support ex-military personnel and their families to provide a pathway for disadvantaged veterans to re-integrate back into society and regain their independence. The central focus of their work is helping to find sustainable employment opportunities.
Events such as the Cumbrian Challenge help to raise vital funds to support the important work the charity undertakes.
