Social value report

Introducing our 2024 social value report

A common theme within the NRL Group’s strategy is social value, because how we grow is of huge importance to us. Woven into how we do business is a drive to always make a difference, from engaging in outreach work to inspire the next generation of engineers, to the positive impact we make in our local communities.

We’re proud of our progress to date and are delighted to share this in our first social value report – from ensuring our colleagues are supported both financially and physically, to playing our part to reduce our impact on the environment and progress diversity and inclusion.

“We wouldn’t be able to produce such an extensive report on our social impact without the dedication and support from colleagues across the NRL Group who bring alive our company values. As an organisation giving back is important, and we’re committed to using our platform to drive forward change and be a force for good. We’re grateful to have fantastic people working within our businesses who share this common goal.”

– David Redmayne, NRL Group CEO

Supporting our communities

From mentoring young people as they begin to consider their future careers, to using paid charity days to support local initiatives that are helping people get back into work, how we support our communities plays an important role in life working at NRL.

As an employer, it’s also important to that we’re giving people to support and financial aid to help others, whether that’s sponsoring grassroot sports or key local events that champion everyday heroes.

“NRL has been an invaluable supporter of High Tide for many years, dedicating countless hours to share their knowledge and expertise with hundreds of young people across Teesside. The career sessions delivered by the NRL team have made a profound impact on our students, inspiring them to explore the exciting engineering career opportunities right on their doorstep.”

Measuring our social value progress is as important to our business as analysing our financial performance. That’s why we’re pleased to reflect on our wide-reaching activities through our first social value report.

Supporting our people

We want everyone who works at the NRL Group to feel valued and cared for, whether that’s investing in their training and development or supporting them with Mental Health First Aiders.

From colleagues who join one of the NRL Group’s businesses to the candidates and contractors who we recruit to support our clients; we welcome applications from all walks of life and are committed to continually progressing our own diversity and inclusion strategy. From supporting personnel preparing to find a rewarding career as they depart our Armed Forces, to lifting disability barriers – we’re committed to delivering meaningful change.

Building a diverse workforce

Equity, diversity and inclusion is important to us, because we recognise the benefit
to our business and our clients when we recruit from a wider talent pool. From
championing underrepresented demographics and genders, to giving people a
starting chance, we’re committed to diversity

Creating a Great Place To Work®

We’re worked hard to create a workplace where colleagues are at the heart of the decisions we make, from smallest to the largest actions we take as a business. Keen to understand the impact this makes in 2024 we independently surveyed our colleagues, asking among many other questions whether we were a great place to work. We were delighted to see that 97% of our workforce agreed, compared to just 54% in a typical company.

Supporting our planet

Whether we’re working on reducing our own carbon footprint as a business, or helping our clients bring their net zero energy transition plans to life, it’s important to us that we’re able to make a difference.

From switching to electric vehicles for company fleet cars, to helping build the UK’s largest electric vehicle battery manufacturing gigafactory, we’re proud of the work we do when it comes to protecting our planet.

Driving down our carbon footprint

In 2021 we embarked on a partnership with One Carbon World to become carbon neutral, purchasing carbon credits to offset emissions we could not immediately eliminate. Since then, we’ve been on a mission to reduce our emissions each year wherever and however we can. We were therefore delighted to each the one tonne CO2e reduction per employee milestone in 2024.
